Transitional Housing Announcement

Webster’s definition of Transition : Noun - 1a. passage from one state, stage, subject or place to another: CHANGE b. a movement, development or evolution from one form, stage or style to another.

In the last two years the Mercy Street community has experienced quite a bit of the PASSAGE type of transition. We have people who have been sent out and others who have been received in. We have shared life’s passages, tried new things, stretched and grown. As we ready ourselves for the New Year we are taking the first step or movement in our mission of transitional housing. Transition as defined also includes the word change. After many discussions, processing, starts and stops, it became apparent that the initial form of transitional housing envisioned by our community was not a viable option. Practically speaking, neither building and maintaining our own home, nor supplying the volunteers to run a recovery program for another group was a realistic goal for us.

During the last few months we observed that several members of our community were either already doing transitional housing or were in the planning stages. Not only were they already providing homes for people in recovery, but also they were doing it very well. These people have poured their lives into providing places for men and women to be successful in their sobriety. It became clear to us that the Spirit was already moving in a powerful way in these homes, and others like it. It became clear that the Mercy Street community was being called to go where God was already at work. With the unanimous support of the advisory committee on transitional housing that was formed last spring, we are committed to the following plan:

Beginning immediately we are starting the process of identifying and partnering with those in our community who are already providing transitional housing. We are going to come along side these folks and provide support in the areas of people power, in-kind donations, financial assistance and, of course, prayer. As I meet with those already in this ministry and identify others, I will be providing the community with information regarding these transitional housing endeavors as well as information about donations and volunteer opportunities.

If you would like to be involved in this new Mercy Street adventure, please email me with your volunteer interest and availability. Additionally, once I post a list of donation needs, let me know what you can provide. I hope and pray that you are as excited as we are about this development in our vision for transitional housing. Friends, we are responding to God’s call…we are venturing out… we are engaging in God’s mission! Fasten your seat belts; it’s going to be a wild ride!
